The Great Depression years are often considered among the most challenging in American history, but for the people who had weathered the financial storm of October 1929 wisely, the result was the opportunity to purchase some of the most beautiful of all motorcars that were now being made available. This AACA-winning 1931 Chrysler CD-8 Rumble Seat Roadster was undoubtedly one of those very cars. For the 1931 model season, Walter P. Chrysler had responded to market conditions by releasing an 8-cylinder engine for the Chrysler product line. This upgrade was the replacement for the brand’s venerable L-head straight-6, which had proven its durability even in competition at Spa and Le Mans before the end of the 1920s. A direct offshoot of Chrysler’s engineering effort, the new straight-8 featured a downdraft carburetor, center-driven distributor and oil pump, mechanical fuel pump and aluminum pistons. With a manual transmission and hydraulic brakes as standard equipment, the cars were well appreciated by their owners. Unfortunately, few buyers were found for the sporty roadster design as the nation’s financial situation worsened, making them even more scarce today. The sleek shape is credited to Al Leamy, who also designed the L29 Cord; the outward-angled front fenders sweep dramatically to the doors and running boards, while the clean, near 90-degree radius at the rear drop contains the rumble seat and paired-rib chrome bumpers. 1999 AACA Senior National First Prize 282 CI Inline 8-cylinder engine 4-speed manual transmission Burgundy and Cream two-tone exterior Beige canvas top Burgundy interior Beige carpets 100 MPH speedometer Rumble seat Chrome bumpers Gazelle mascot Red wire wheels Wide Whitewall tires The recipient of a 1999 National 1st Prize AACA, this two-door sport model is painted in two-tone cream with burgundy highlights and features a tan canvas top. Inside is burgundy leather upholstery, beige carpets and a red dash panel with instrumentation, including the 100 MPH speedometer. Other outside trim includes the rear-mount spare behind the rumble seat, cowl-mount auxiliary lamps, the single tail lamp with “STOP” and “CHRYSLER” cast to the underside, and the special winged gazelle hood ornament atop the screened-covered radiator. This CD-8 rides on red wire wheels with wide whitewall tires. Though overshadowed in some regards by the new custom-bodied Imperials that also debuted that model year, the short-run CD series Chryslers, like this wonderful example, were considered beautiful products from the start, retaining a true collector following.
